Hi, I’m Coach Benj. I have been involved with North Herts Knights since the age of 9 as a junior player where I continued to play for the club, captaining the clubs first ever National League Team in 2014-15, and now playing for our Senior 2nd team. I started my coaching journey at the age of 13 and have been coaching at the club ever since. The 2020-2021 season will see me embark on my 7th year of coaching at the club. This summer I was proud to be appointed Head Coach of the club, where I will oversee the entire youth program we have at Knights.

Ben Ryan

Basketball England Level 2
Roles
  • U12 Local League Head Coach
  • Community Coach

Hi, I’m Ben! Originally from Vancouver, Canada, I started playing basketball at 16 and went on to play for my high school team who were a top 20 provincial team at the time. After playing recreational basketball at university, I moved to the UK in 2001. I started playing for NHK in 2002 where I have been part of the furniture for the past 18 seasons.

I became a level 2 coach in 2019 and was an assistant coach for the U12 Local League team last season. Now in my second year as a coach I am looking forward to my role as Head Coach of the U12 Local League team.

Rafe Abrook

Basketball England Level 2
Roles
  • U14 Local League Head Coach
  • Community Coach

Born and raised on the Isle of Wight, I have now played in competitive Men’s Basketball Leagues in 5 decades, from the 80’s to the 20’s! I left the Isle of Wight in 1994 to study at the University of Hertfordshire and settled in the area, helping the team in my Freshman season to the BUSA Plate Championship. My National League playing career spanned 4 stages between 1997 and 2019 playing for Ware Rebels, West Herts Warriors, Cambridge Cats and Hemel Storm 2 during that time. My greatest achievement being the starting Power Forward on Warriors 2005-06 EBL Division 2 winning squad. Other team-based achievements are several Herts Premier League Title wins with Luton Fliers and North Herts Knights, and helping the Isle of Wight Basketball team to a record 5th place finish in the 2017 Island Games in Gotland, Sweden. Individual career highlights include winning 2 x 3 point shoot out trophies, 2 Bradford Tournament Slam Dunk Contest wins, and winning MVP of the Longford Basketball Tournament in Ireland (2005).

As a Coach last year was my Rookie season, and I was delighted to see the growth of our U12 Local League squad who only lost one game all season when shorthanded, and could have easily gone undefeated. This year I look forward to stepping up to the U14 Local League squad, taking some of last season’s squad with me as I continue their player and team based development. I can’t wait to get started!

Jeff Ee

Basketball England Level 2
Roles
  • U16 National League Co-Head Coach

Hi! My name is Jeff and I have been playing basketball for about 17 years. I have been involved with North Herts Knights since the age of 17 where I've played for both the 1st and 2nd Senior teams. I became a level 2 coach in 2019 and was Assistant Coach for the U18 National League team last season. I am looking forward to my second year of coaching as Co-Head Coach of the U16 National League team!

Jon Arnold

Basketball England Level 2
Roles
  • Senior Men’s 2nd Team Head Coach

Hi, my name is Jon Arnold and I’m the Head Coach of the Knights Men’s 2nd team, known as K2.

I first fell in love with the game in my early teens when I started going to watch the Ovaltine play in what is now the BBL. I joined Hemel Cougars aged 15 and was part of the HPL Division 2 double winning side in that first season. I then moved onto local rivals Hemel Rebels and spent two seasons in the U17 HPL league side, winning the league title in both seasons. That squad then moved onto play in the now defunct Luton & District Senior League where I was involved for another couple of seasons.

Having stepped away from the game for many years, I got back involved with Bedford Thunder in 2015 as a newly formed club trying to find their way in the sport. I took my Level 2 Coaching exams in the summer of 2016 and moved to Knights at the start of that season.

Tom Ryan

Basketball England Level 1
Roles
  • U16 National League Assistant Coach
  • Community Coach

Hi, I’m Tom. I’ve been interested in every aspect of basketball since my first training session. I am currently the captain for the U18 National League team and am going into my 4th year of playing National League basketball with NHK. This will also be my 2nd year coaching, having been the Assistant Coach for the U14 Local League and U16 National League teams last season. I can’t wait to get started and see how everyone will develop over the coming year.

Chris Whybrow

Basketball England Level 1
Roles
  • Community Coach

Hi! My name is Chris and I have been involved in basketball for about 25 years, mostly as a player. I have played at a National League level at U16, U18 and Men’s levels during this time and I have played for NHK’s Senior 1st team for the last 5 years.

Coaching the community sessions will be my first official coaching role and I am very much looking forward to teaching the next generation the joy of playing basketball.

Outside of basketball, I work as a physiotherapist at a local private hospital. I enjoy other sports like rugby and football and I especially enjoy mountain walking challenges.
